The Lightbringer Dwarves

The society that most defies convention in the Underdark is the Lightbringer Dwarves. While the dwarven societies which devolved into the Duergar have lost contact with the surface world and were generally trapped in the Underdark by accident, the Lightbringer Dwarves have purposefully settled the Underdark as their home. They maintain connections to the surface world, and while the rest of the Underdark is defined by darkness, these dwarves, as their name suggests, live in cities and towns that are as bright as the surface.

Centuries ago, a clan of dwarves which worshiped Pelor as much as they did Dunnbrok broke through to the underdark. Because of their devotion, as a small settlement was constructed and defended, Pelor granted the dwarves a miracle: the creation of an eternal divine sun at the center of their community. Over the centuries, the Lightbringer Dwarves have become masters of lenses and mirrors, using them to redirect the light of Pelor throughout their cities and towns. Lines of mirrors and lenses transport light as bright as surface sunlight throughout their domain, lighting up both cities and smaller suns that illuminate farmland. This magic allows for traditional farming to be conducted in the Underdark, and has created a society that operates almost exactly like a surface society does in many ways.

In the wake of The Cataclysm, the creation of The Celestine Pillar created a unique opportunity for these dwarves. The eternal divine light which turned grasslands and temperate areas into a rolling expanse of desert functioned very similarly to the divine sun at the center of First Light, the Lightbringers' capital. Though their capital isn't near The Krosh Desert, teleportation circles have been established and the Lightbringers are now using their mastery of mirrors and lenses to convert various locations beneath The Krosh Desert into habitable, lush communities.
